I don't usually like the idea of mask making. Apart from the amount of preparation and materials needed there is the issue of the theme and context, as in this case, being asked to do an African Mask making workshop. I prepared well overdoing it in my collecting of resources and taking time and trouble to make samples. Looking at the time allocated, 2 hours, I knew it is not possible to impart the amount of background information on this subject to do it justice before getting into the practicalities of the making. I was over ambitious with my lesson plan in at all stages; introduction, demonstration, set up and delivery method. With 36 students aged 13 to 15 years it would be a challenge to get into it and achieve some kind of end result a challenge indeed.
On the day I did my spiel at the beginning, covering,the subjects of many different cultures engage in many different forms of mask making and masquerade, for many different reasons etc.....but I could sense the lack of attention in the room from early on, I battled on and even got to the point of asking how many African countries the students could name. I got a few, before we were overdue getting launched into the making of. They gave it a good go and in the end there were some fine results.
Thanks to the students and their helpers for their perseverance, but there was nowhere near enough time.
